Human-Centered Design Toolkit from IDEO
I’ve been talking for a couple of years about how experience design can improve human outcomes and cost less. Some of the techniques we use, especially around observation and conversations, have been codified by the designers and thinkers at IDEO who have published the Human Centered Design Toolkit. It’s for NGOs, non-profits, and other social enterprises. The authors emphasize that their design methods are a good fit for projects involving people who make less than US$2.00 per day. The Toolkit comes with a complete guide to downloadable materials and mini-case studies. New solutions are viewed through three lenses of desirability, feasibility and viability. The three phases of the HCD process are (1) Hear (stories and inspiration from field research); (2) Create (workshops with frameworks, opportunities, solutions and protoypes); and (3) Deliver (revenue and cost modeling, capability assessment, and implementation planning).
